Washer Maintenance Tips:
Here are a few tips to stop your washer from developing mold or odors, and potentially mechanical failures:
1. Leave the door open when not in use. This helps prevent mold and mildew inside the drum and door gasket by providing ventilation and giving the washer a chance to dry.
2. Minimise liquid detergent & fabric softener usage (FYI – pods contain liquid detergent too). Using excessive amounts causes a layer of residual soap scum to form, which encourages mold and bacteria growth. It can also cause excessive sudsing, which can lead to functional problems in the washer’s operation. We recommend limiting liquid detergent use to #1-3 on the measuring cup, or never using more than one detergent pod per load.
3. Consider using powder detergent. Powder detergent doesn’t leave behind a residual layer like liquid detergent does, but it can irritate sensitive skin because it doesn’t wash out of clothing fibers as well as liquid detergent.
4. Wipe underneath the fold in your front-load washer’s door gasket after every cycle. It’s common for small amounts of water to pool here.
5. Run a monthly cleaning cycle. Use your washer’s ‘Self-Clean’ (aka ‘tub-clean’) cycle once per month. Add any cleaning product that’s main ingredient is sodium percarbonate, such as Affresh Washer Cleaner, to help remove soap residue and prevent odors.
6. Load the washer properly. Avoid overloading (no more than ¾ full for top-load washers; loosely filled for front-load). Underloading can also cause imbalance during the spin cycle because there aren’t enough items to distribute weight evenly around the tub, leading to vibration and wear.
7. Schedule washer service for unusual noises. If you notice loud and unusual sounds, contact us to schedule a service call. In many cases this may prevent further damage.
