How to Maintain Your Dryer: Tips For Homeowners
- Have the dryer exhaust airflow professionally measured at the exterior vent cap every few years and cleaned if it falls below manufacturer recommended specifications. Dryer exhaust ducts restricted by lint build-up can lead to overheating, longer drying times, higher energy bills, and premature part failures.
- Clean the lint filter(s) after every cycle. If you are in an apartment building, there may be a secondary lint filter mounted above your dryer or on the wall that also needs to be cleaned.
- Deep clean the lint filter screen annually if you use dryer sheets: soak your lint filter in a 50/50 hot water and vinegar solution to remove the invisible residue that restricts airflow through fine mesh lint filters.
- Don’t ignore unusual symptoms like changes in noise. Sometimes fixing a problem early on can prevent secondary failures. Call for service.
